Larger, well-known assisted living and memory care communities with a full profile of their HHSC record.
Assisted living is an HHSC-licensed residence that provides housing, meals, medication help and personal care; memory care in Texas is assisted living delivered in a secured unit by a facility that holds an HHSC Alzheimer's certification. Texas has no separate memory care license, and a facility may not advertise that it specializes in Alzheimer's or dementia care unless it holds that certification.
| Assisted living is... | Memory care is... | |
|---|---|---|
| Who it serves | Adults who need help with bathing, dressing, medications or meals but can live in an open building | People with Alzheimer's or another dementia who may wander, exit-seek or need constant cueing |
| License on the HHSC record | Assisted Living Facility, Type A (can evacuate unassisted) or Type B (may need help evacuating; awake night staff) | Type B Assisted Living Facility plus an Alzheimer's certificate number and a certified bed count |
| Building | Open doors; residents come and go | Secured (locked or alarmed) unit or building |
| It isn't... | A nursing home: there is no 24-hour licensed-nurse requirement | Skilled nursing: residents with heavy medical needs still need a nursing facility |
| Typical 2026 cost | $3,800 to $5,800 per month | $4,800 to $7,000 per month |
Every entry comes from the state record, not from a paid listing: the HHSC license number, Type A or Type B license, licensed beds, first-licensed date, Alzheimer's certification, last inspection date and any administrative penalty. 39 of the 449 assisted living facilities have an HHSC penalty on their record, and we show it.
